A new townhouse with a compact footprint and a lot of hard edges — dark cladding, glass and paving — needed a garden that felt soft, private and finished from day one.

The brief: turn a tight urban courtyard into an outdoor room. Green on every sightline, screening from the neighbours, and planting robust enough to thrive in a warm, reflected-heat corner of the block.

Layered, climate-matched planting does the heavy lifting: ornamental grasses and silver groundcovers spilling over the edges, clipped buxus for structure, and standard topiary in tall fluted concrete planters to draw the eye up.

A crisp strip of lawn gives the family somewhere to be, while horizontal batten screening and potted specimens close the garden off from the street. Everything runs on integrated drip irrigation, so it holds through a Canberra summer with almost no input.
